The Budget

Sir,

Yesterday (15 December, 2010) Labour MEPs voted against the EU budget increase in Strasbourg.  We rejected these proposals in October, for exactly the same reasons as we did yesterday.  At at time when all EU member states are tightening their belts and cutting billions from public spending, it would be inconceivable to support any increase in the budget.

Labour in Europe have campaigned for more cuts and particularly for the reform of wasteful and expensive agricultural policies.  We are supporting cuts of more than one billion euros in EU agricultural subsidies.  David Cameron has spent a lot of time boasting and praising himself for his own “spectacularly”, when in fact he wrongly told the House of Commons in October that Labour MEPs were wasteful for supporting an increase in the EU budget.  At the end of the day Mr. Cameron, all we have is the same 2.9% deal that was hammered out back in August.

Your Sincerely,

Catherine Stihler MEP
