FOOD INDUSTRY "MUST NOW ACCEPT THE NEED FOR HONEST LABELLING"
The food industry must now accept that they need to be more upfront and honest about the way they label their packages, following new rules approved by the European Parliament today.
New rules now require companies to display more nutritional information about their products on the front of packs. This is a significant victory for British consumers and is a move strongly welcomed by the National Farmers Union and consumer groups.
A massive lobby and PR push by the food industry has defeated proposals by Euro MPs to require the use of “traffic light labels” on many processed foods, such as ready meals.
Speaking from the European Parliament, Labour MEP and consumer rights activist, Mrs Stihler stated:
“Food manufacturers have failed in their bid to block honest front of packaging labelling”.
“Although not approving colour coded labels, the parliament did back a requirement for foods to include key nutritional information, including the amount of salt, fat and sugar contained in the product, on the front of packaging”.
“Manufacturers were pushing to limit this requirement to the back of the pack”.
Campaign to continue
Mrs Stihler added:
“I am disappointed that we did not get an agreement on the traffic light system. However, the campaign is not over. Labour MEPs will continue to campaign in the very best interests of British consumers and public health”.
“Faced with alarming obesity rates and rising cases of heart disease, it is no time to be complacent about these pressing issues”.
