The action by the German Government to ban naked short selling was commended by some and fiercely condemned by others. The courage to take on speculators is vitally important in a time of economic crisis. However acting unilaterally in the eurozone appeared more like flying a red rag in the face of a bull than an act of cooperative action. The challenges faced by the eurozone are becoming more political than economic. In a recent article Jurgen Habermas was asked whether the Greek debt crisis would doom the European project. He said Greece’s debt...

caffeine and alcohol (and no I am not talking about an Irish coffee
taken at the end of a meal) into a pre-mixed drink, it is no
surprise that this potent cocktail has damaging effects not just on
the individual but also on society at large. There is a growing
drinks market in the EU of these types of products which is
targeted at the young and which has the potential for serious side

How may of us would like to see the ghost of Christmas past,

realise what is truly important in life or with the Budget vote
days away some colleagues may think we could learn a thing or two

years ago marked a new chapter in the history of Europe. Some
historians comment that the end of the Cold War actually marked the
final end to a war that began in 1914. When you talk to colleagues

Mr
President,

I am glad to have the
opportunity to speak on this joint motion for a resolution on Press
Freedom in Kenya .

A year ago, like many others
I was dismayed and disappointed that after flawed presidential
elections in Kenya , street demonstrations led to riots and ethnic
clashes that spread across the country, killing more than 1,000
people and leaving another 350,000 homeless. Those responsible for
the post-election violence a year ago must be brought to
justice.

And a period of reconciliation and
tolerance is now essential for Kenya .

In this context it is very bad news that on Friday, January 2nd 2009,
President Kibaki signed the Kenya
Communications (Amendment) Bill...

The story of Shirin Ebadi, Nobel
Peace Prize winning lawyer, the first Muslim Woman and first
Iranian to receive the prize maybe well known to most of us here
today.

She was the first female judge in
her country but was forced to resign due to the Iranian
revolution.

She defended the rights of Iranian
women and children, fighting to change divorce and inheritance laws
in Iran

She has stood up to defend
religious minorities and their rights. Most recently she has
defended 7 members of the Baha'i faith who had been collectively
arrested and who are persecuted in Iran.

But it is her work on human rights
and her courage...

Thank you, Mr
President

Colleagues, think for a moment
about your worst nightmare.

It will not even come close to what
is happening to the people of Zimbabwe.

Once a prosperous country, it has
been turned on its head by its President.

The country is collapsing: no
governance, no jobs, hyper-inflation, no food, and no health
service. The breakdown of the sanitation system is now creating a
cholera outbreak.

A week ago Zimbabwean President
Robert Mugabe said the cholera outbreak had been "arrested". He
claimed Western powers wanted to use an epidemic as an excuse to
invade Zimbabwe and topple him.

However, South Africa has declared
most of its northern border...
