The Commissioner's Hearings

January 2010 is an extremely busy month for the European Parliament due to the Commissioner’s Hearings (January 11th - 19th).  The new European Commission has 27 members; including a President and 26 Commissioner’s who have responsibility for a particular portfolio.  The Commissioner’s Hearing give MEPs the opportunity to have a detailed exchange of view with them and to discuss the priorities of the 2009 – 2013 period.  During Commissioner Semeta’s hearing – who has responsibility for Taxation and Customs Union, Audit and Anti-Fraud – I expressed my concern about the proliferation of falsified medicines in Europe.  It is vital that the EU strengthens its measures to protect all citizens from the dangers of counterfeiting and piracy.
