Big Society

Sir,

Conservative Cabinet Minister Francis Maude MP, by his own admission, has revealed his true position on the Big Society.  He is not involved.  Whilst Maude has spent hours promoting the importance of charity work and volunteering, when asked last summer on BBC Radio 4 what he is personally involved in, he replied “Gosh that’s an unfair question.  Cold”.  He then spent at least the next couple of minutes avoiding the question because he could not on the spot answer the question.  If Cameron’s vision of the Big Society is ever going to materialise, then surely he should be briefing his own MPs on the importance of volunteering and perhaps encouraging them to get out in the community.  The Tories may believe our society is ‘broken’, but if they were more in touch with reality, then they would discover that most people do contribute to their local communities and society at large.  As Chair of the Big Society committee, Maude’s leadership skills are far from inspiring and certainly not noble.

Yours sincerely,

Catherine Stihler MEP
