Catherine Stihler, Scottish Labour MEP

Catherine Stihler, Euro MP for Scotland [Labour], has put her full weight behind the ‘End Prostitution Now’ campaign.

Mrs Stihler has tabled a question to the European Commission asking if it will follow the example of Sweden, Norway and Iceland and introduce legislation to address the growth in prostitution and trafficking of women.

Mrs Stihler stated:

“I strongly welcome Glasgow City Council’s initiative and I put my full weight behind their campaign. 

It is absolutely vital that action is taken to address the sexual exploitation of women.  The continued exploitation of women is a great obstacle in the fight for equality between men and women”. 

Mrs Stihler added:

“It is clear that the Swedish approach has worked.  Studies show that 80% of the public now view prostitution as unacceptable.  The Swedish laws reflect the countries attitude toward tackling inequality and the exploitation of women for sex”.
