Sir, The European rules to bring working hours of self-employed lorry drivers in to line with safety limits for drivers working for transport companies will be challenged today in the European Parliament (16 June 2010). Driving – especially whilst tired – is one of the most dangerous work related activities that people do each day. Research into the field of driver fatigue led to new European rules in 2005 limiting working hours in road transport to a maximum of 60 in any one week. Everyone is familiar with the phrase ‘tiredness kills’, yet...

Labour’s Scottish Euro-MPs are about to vote on whether shoppers have a right to clear and understandable information about the food we buy. But food manufacturers have been lobbying hard to stop the use of ‘traffic light labels’, which use green, amber and red markings to show how much salt, fat and sugar is contained in processed foods like ready meals. The British Heart Foundation and Which? both back the labels, and I’ve received many letters from people in Scotland asking me to support them. I for one am very happy...

The recent surge in the sale of Buckfast throughout the UK, should not detract attention from the fact that there are clear health risks associated with caffeinated alcohol (your report, 11 March). If you combine high levels of caffeine and alcohol into a pre-mixed drink, it is no surprise that the end result is a potent and dangerous cocktail. As Dr Steven Alexander stated, caffeinated alcoholic drinks are clearly dangerous and it is concerning that such drinks are growing in popularity in parts of England.

exploitation and trafficking of women is a global problem. Many men
who purchase sex do so without considering that many prostitutes
come from backgrounds scarred by child abuse, violence and
poverty. I urge the European Commission to follow the example of Sweden,
Norway and Iceland and introduce legislation to address the growth

The European Union is the most successful peace process the world

However, joining the EU is not a one-way street. Although I support further enlargement of the EU, it cannot
be guaranteed that all Western Balkan nations will be eligible to
join the EU by 2014. Expansion cannot continue ‘without
interruption’, as the Montenegrin Prime
Minister, Milo Djukanovic, recently stated.

Sir,

It is appalling that
David Cameron and his party have deemed it appropriate to parade
two right-wing extremists at their conference in Manchester. Going by Mr Cameron’s choice in allies, it goes to show you that
they are the same old Tories – a party that has little respect for
modern Britain and our rich, diverse societies.

How can the Tories claim
to be a modern, dynamic Party when they lend legitimacy to people
whose views are anything but socially progressive? The
principles of equal treatment and non-discrimination are the
cornerstones of our rights and values. It is vital that

Sir,

I write in response to
your report ‘European law spells end for traditional Scottish
sporran’.

The European
Parliament’s decision to adopt a ban on the trade in seal products
is a victory for people power and has come after a long and hard
fought campaign by animal rights activists all across the
globe.

The vast majority of
people in Scotland and across Europe are absolutely horrified by
the barbaric slaughtering practices exercised by seal clubbers in
commercial hunts. Too often have we seen repellent images of
baby seals being clubbed to death for their fur. Opinion
polling shows strong majorities across European Member States back
a ban, between 70% and over...

Sir,

Your
correspondent Mary Rolls incorrectly asserts that "of course the
European Parliament does not make the laws that now control
practically every aspect of our lives" and that "the European
Parliament may, though rarely does, amend the commission's
decisions, directives and regulations but only after a complicated
process of horse-trading with the commission and the council,
advised by COREPER (Committee of Permanent Representatives of EU
member states), a powerful but little-known body composed of
mandarins from 27 countries." This is simply
untrue.

Every revision
of the Treaties has seen an increase in the power of the European
Parliament in relation to the other institutions. Today the
European Parliament is firmly...
