Ban the Sale of the Sex Trade

Sir,
It is ironic that the Association for the Defence of Sex Workers has challenged mayor Ritt Bjerregaard for so-called discriminatory measures (your report, 11 December).
The sexual exploitation and trafficking of women is a global problem. Many men who purchase sex do so without considering that many prostitutes come from backgrounds scarred by child abuse, violence and poverty.

I urge the European Commission to follow the example of Sweden, Norway and Iceland and introduce legislation to address the growth of prostitution and its associated risks. Since the Swedish government criminalised the purchase of sexual services, 80 per cent of the public in Sweden now consider prostitution "unacceptable". In addition, there are very few cases of women being forced into the sex trade as a result of human trafficking in all three countries.

Yours sincerely,
